Telecare (formerly known as Careline) is a 24-hour personal alarm and emergency response service delivered by Southampton City Council. It is available to eligible students living in UoS accommodation within Southampton and is designed to help you feel safe and supported at all times.
Telecare provides peace if mind if you have a health condition, disability, or personal circumstances that mean you may need urgent assistance while living in halls.
How Telecare works
If you are approved for Telecare, you will receive a personal alarm device (usually worn as a pendant or wristband).
Here's how it works:
- Press the alarm button any time you need urgent help.
- Your call connects immediately to Telecare/Careline's 24/7 monitoring team.
- A responder will speak to you through the base unit, assess the situation, and arrange appropriate assistance.
- If responders need to access your room, they will coordinate with your halls reception, who will accompany them to your room.
- Your nominated emergency contact or the emergency services may be called if required.
If you ever use your alarm, please let the Residences or Student Disability & Inclusion (SDI) teams know afterwards so we can offer further support.
How to access Telecare through the University
The SDI team and Residences team work together to assess eligibility and arrange Telecare for students.
Step 1: Speak to the SDI team
If you think Telecare may be helpful for you, contact the SDI team to discuss it as part of your Student Support Recommendation (SSR).
If they agree it's appropriate, they will confirm this to the Residences team.
Step 2: Residences approval
The Residences team will approve the installation with Southampton City Council's Telecare service. The University covers the full cost of Telecare units for eligible students.
Step 3: Installation
After approval, you must contact Southampton City Council shortly after arrival to book your installation appointment.
Please also update the Residences team once installation is complete.
